North Dakota State University, commonly known as NDSU and officially named North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, is a public university in Fargo, which is the largest city in North Dakota, as well as the county seat of Cass County. In 2008, the population of Fargo City was estimated at a number of nearly 100 000 inhabitants, more of whom were living in the metropolitan area – over 200 000.
NDSU was founded in 1890, under the name of North Dakota Agricultural College, as a land-grant institution. The university sits on a 258-acre campus, and it is a part of North Dakota University System. NDSU offers a total of 360 academic programs, including over 100 bachelor’s, more than 75 minors, nearly 60 master’s, 42 doctoral’s, as well as 3 professional degrees.
The athletic teams from NDSU are known as the North Dakota State Bison, or simply The Bison, being nicknamed by fans as the "Thundering Herd". The teams compete in the NCAA Division I in all sports, except football, in which they compete in the Division I Championship Subdivision. The Bison teams are best known for their achievements in football, basketball, and wrestling, in which they’ve experienced victory many times in the past years, winning 4 Division II titles in wrestling, in ’88, ’98, 2000 and 2001.
